A beautiful Louis Vuitton mail trunk dating from 1909, covered in the Maison’s iconic stenciled canvas and reinforced with sturdy steel borders.
The condition of this piece is remarkable: the exterior canvas has retained its freshness, the metal edging displays a lovely original patina, and the owner’s painted initials are still visible on both sides — a refined detail typical of early 20th-century personalization.
The trunk is fitted with strong metal side handles and three brass locks stamped “Louis Vuitton.” The underside remains exceptionally clean, featuring four original wooden casters and finely engraved Louis Vuitton stamps on each slat.
Inside, the trunk is entirely original and complete — a perfect illustration of Louis Vuitton’s craftsmanship in designing luggage for elegant female travelers of the early 1900s.
It contains a large hat box, compartments for gloves, belts, handkerchiefs, corsets, and dresses — every accessory a lady of the era might have needed for an extended journey.
The internal frames include an ingenious system of crossed ribbons and supports designed to keep each garment in perfect condition throughout the voyage. This clever mechanism, patented by Louis Vuitton, was especially appreciated by women of high society who wished to find their wardrobes pristine upon arrival.
The interior padding remains in excellent condition, preserving its original Louis Vuitton label with serial number and the Maison’s historic addresses.
When the trunk was acquired, an old invoice was discovered inside — from a Californian jewelry store in the 1930s, showing a very high amount for the time — adding a fascinating historical dimension to this already exceptional piece.
Overall in excellent condition: bright stenciled canvas, beautifully preserved metal trim and brass fittings, and a complete original interior.
A superb example of Louis Vuitton’s early 20th-century artistry, combining history, refinement, and ingenious design.
