Superb Louis Vuitton courier trunk dating from the 1950s, an iconic model of the Maison and the only historical design still offered for sale in Louis Vuitton’s current collections.
Originally, this trunk was among the most popular models of the early 20th century, favored by travelers setting off for several weeks who wished to combine practicality with the refinement of the great trunk makers.
This example features a stenciled canvas typical of the 1930–1935 period, preserved in remarkably fine condition. It also displays painted family colors — yellow and green — running around the trunk, accompanied by the original owner’s initials on each side, hand-painted in matching tones. Such personalizations were highly fashionable at the time, allowing hotel porters, railway staff, and ship crews to identify a family’s luggage at a glance. Here, the decoration consists of two bold colored stripes, enhanced with a painted circle enclosing the initials.
The trunk is fitted with solid brass hardware, lozine borders with their original patina, and leather handles restored to the original Louis Vuitton specifications.
The interior is lined with coated beige cotton canvas, designed to protect personal effects from humidity and odorsduring long voyages. It retains its authentic Louis Vuitton label, listing the historic store addresses of the Maison, including the famous “Vuitton Building” on the Champs-Élysées in Paris, as well as the trunk’s serial number.
In very good overall condition, the canvas remains almost immaculate, the lozine trim shows a beautiful natural patina, and the structure is rigid and solid. The interior is clean and complete, with only a few light traces of use, bearing witness to its authentic history of travel.
This trunk is currently available exclusively at Maxfield in Los Angeles, where you are warmly invited to view it on Melrose Avenue.
