Louis Vuitton trunk c.1910

Exceptional and rare long Louis Vuitton trunk dating from the 1910s, covered in one of the first stenciled “L. Vuitton” monogram canvases and reinforced with light-colored lozine trim — the most luxurious finish offered by the Maison at the time.

It features three solid brass locks stamped “LV”, two original leather handles, and six wooden reinforcing slats. Measuring an impressive 1.30 meters in length, this was among the largest courier trunk models listed in Louis Vuitton’s early 20th-century catalogues.

Running around the trunk are beautiful family colors painted in yellow and blue. These colored stripes, which appeared in the late 19th century, were essential for identification: they allowed the staff of a household — valets, drivers, or porters — to immediately recognize their employer’s luggage among hundreds of similar trunks in hotel lobbies, train stations, or aboard steamships.
A true mark of social distinction, these “family colors” reflected the heritage and refinement of their owners, with each wealthy family adopting its own hues — often inspired by its coat of arms or heraldic colors.

This model also includes wooden side reinforcements, added to protect the trunk when used in a vertical position, along with a thick wooden block on the left side to prevent tipping. A small wheel on the right-hand side allowed the lid, which converted into a door, to open smoothly and safely.

Originally, this type of trunk was fitted with a complete interior layout designed for a gentleman of the era — compartments for hats, shoes, shirts, and accessories, as well as a large storage section in the base.
Although empty today, the trunk still retains all the original mounting points, identical to those illustrated in the Louis Vuitton 1912 catalogue.

In very fine condition, the stenciled canvas has developed a beautiful, authentic patina, the light lozine trim retains its subtle satin sheen, and the solid brass fittings remain bright and intact.
Thanks to its impressive length and ideal height, this trunk is perfectly suited for a contemporary interior — as a monumental coffee table or a decorative piece at the foot of a bed — while preserving the majesty and spirit of French travel luxury.
