Adorable small Louis Vuitton hat trunk dating from 1938, covered with the Maison’s iconic stenciled canvas and reinforced with lozine trim, typical of Louis Vuitton’s creations from this period.
Originally designed for the female clientele, this model was particularly popular in the early 20th century. The canvas used for this trunk features a slightly darker tone than traditional finishes — a hue characteristic of Louis Vuitton’s late 1930s production.
The trunk is fitted with beautiful brass hardware, four Louis Vuitton–stamped reinforcing castors mounted beneath the wooden base, and two original leather handles in outstanding condition. The initials of the original owner, “S.Y.”, are hand-painted in yellow on the sides and top of the trunk.
The interior is exceptionally fresh. It is lined with starched cotton canvas and features a clean, well-preserved padded lid. Remarkably, the complete original interior layout is still present — including a stunning “Paradis” hat cage designed to hold multiple hats, and an upper fabric tray intended for accessories. Today, it is exceedingly rare to find a Louis Vuitton hat trunk with an interior this complete and so beautifully preserved.
The original Louis Vuitton label remains intact, listing the historic store addresses of the Maison at the time of production.
In very good overall condition, the exterior canvas shows a soft, even patina, the brass fittings shine beautifully, and the interior is nearly immaculate and entirely original.
Both refined and functional, this small Louis Vuitton hat trunk perfectly embodies the craftsmanship and timeless charm of the Maison’s art of travel.
This trunk is currently available exclusively at Maxfield in Los Angeles, where you are warmly invited to view it on Melrose Avenue.
