Louis Vuitton Trunk, circa 1920

Magnificent Louis Vuitton trunk from the 1920s, covered with the famous Vuittonite canvas, an emblematic material of the Maison during that period.

Historically, this canvas was created at the request of the Tsar of Russia, who wanted luggage free of any initials other than his own. Following its success with the imperial court, Louis Vuitton soon added this distinctive material to its catalog, where it became one of the most refined finishes of the early 20th century.

This trunk stands out for its vibrant golden-yellow patina, the result of a century of travel and exposure to light. Originally, the canvas was bright orange, but time has transformed it into a unique, sunlit hue. In the areas protected from the light — beneath the straps, handles, and inner edges — the original orange shade is still visible, revealing an exceptional chromatic evolution.

The piece features the most luxurious finish of its era, with full leather trim and solid brass hardware. It is fitted with four wheels, two original leather handles, and three locks stamped Louis Vuitton Paris.

The interior is fully original, lined with linen canvas and adorned with a Louis Vuitton monogrammed padded lid. It still bears its authentic manufacturer’s label, listing the historic store addresses in Paris (rue Scribe) and London, as well as the serial number carefully marked on the canvas. At the time, these labels helped travelers identify where to service or repair their trunks when abroad.

In very good overall condition, the trunk shows a beautiful aged patina, well-preserved leathers, and an interior that, despite light marks, remains completely original. A slight surface ripple on the front canvas does not affect the visual harmony or structural integrity of this exceptional piece — a remarkable example of Louis Vuitton’s craftsmanship from the 1920s.
