Beautiful Louis Vuitton courier trunk dating from 1892, covered in the iconic Damier canvas, used by the Maison only between 1888 and 1896, and reinforced with leather borders, the most luxurious finish offered at the time.
This piece features handsome red family colors, accompanied by the initials of the original owner hand-painted on each side. Such personalization was essential at the end of the 19th century, allowing staff to immediately identify a client’s luggage — whether in a grand hotel lobby, on a train platform, or aboard a transatlantic steamer.
During this period, the wealthiest travelers almost exclusively chose Louis Vuitton trunks, which had already become symbols of luxury, innovation, and practicality. With so many similar models traveling the world, personalization was both a matter of style and necessity.
The solid brass hardware is beautifully preserved, and the three central locks are each stamped Louis Vuitton Paris.
The interior is lined with beige cotton canvas and features a padded lid. The original removable tray, remarkably well-preserved for a trunk of this age, includes several compartments designed for gentlemen’s accessories of the late 19th century — including spaces for shirts, ties, and gloves.
The original Louis Vuitton label remains in place, showing a five-digit serial number printed on the fabric — a detail that attests to the exceptional age of this model, as later productions carried nine-digit numbers.
In very good condition for its age, the exterior canvas shows a beautiful original patina, the leather trim is well-preserved, and the structure remains solid. This courier format, emblematic of the Louis Vuitton Maison, is today among the most sought-after by collectors.
Perfectly proportioned, this trunk can now find its place in a contemporary interior, serving as a coffee table or decorative piece. It perfectly embodies the art of travel and the refined luxury of the late 19th century, a period during which Louis Vuitton had already established itself as a global symbol of elegance and craftsmanship.
This trunk is currently available exclusively at Maxfield in Los Angeles, where you are warmly invited to discover it on Melrose Avenue.
