Superb Louis Vuitton courier trunk dating from around 1900, covered in the woven jacquard canvas, the first monogrammed material ever created by the Maison, and reinforced with beautiful steel borders. It retains its two original metal side handles, a testament to the strength and craftsmanship of Louis Vuitton’s early productions.
Running around the trunk is a painted red stripe, known as the family color, which allowed the owner’s staff to instantly identify their trunks among the luggage of other travelers. This kind of personalization was very common at the time, especially among prominent families who traveled with large sets of luggage, each piece marked with their distinctive colors and initials.
The trunk features a particularly appealing format, being a narrow courier model — a size highly sought after today for its balanced proportions and decorative versatility. Perfectly dimensioned, it lends itself beautifully to modern interiors, whether used as a coffee table, side trunk, or end-of-bed piece, while retaining the full prestige of its original purpose.
The interior, in good condition, is lined with cotton canvas and features a padded lid. The authentic Louis Vuitton label is still present, along with the original serial number, confirming its production at the very beginning of the 20th century.
In good overall condition for its age, the jacquard canvas, which is particularly delicate on this model, shows a beautiful original patina. Its elegant and well-balanced format makes it a perfect decorative piece for a contemporary interior, while preserving all the charm and heritage of early travel.
This trunk is currently available exclusively at Maxfield in Los Angeles, where you are warmly invited to view it on Melrose Avenue.
